AN 'UNSUPPORTED' TREK TO THE BASE CAMP OF MOUNT EVEREST

"It's not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves"

Sir Edmund Hilary

In February 2009, we shall be setting off on a venture, through Nepal, to the base camp of Mount Everest. We shall travel over some of the regions harshest terrains and witness some of the most amazing sights the world has to offer.

The trip will last for a duration of approximatly 3 weeks with the trek being broken up into stages, spaced out with acclimatisation rest days along the way. Flying into Lukla from Kathmandu we will then travel North East towards the base camp stopping at various villages along the way.

At the start of 2008, it was decided that we could use our trip to help out a worthwhile cause. We have chosen to attempt to raise a sum of money in aid of the Help For Heroes organisation. The charity raises funds to assist those who have been injured in the line of duty or the the families of those killed in action whilse serving with the British Armed Forces in the current campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The team is made up of 5 friends with an interest in the outdoors and the extreme and who wanted a goal that would challenge them both physically and mentally. That is why we have decided to go unsupported on this trip. By unsupported, we mean that on the usual treks to the base camp, companies provide guides, local sherpas or porters who are there to carry equipment, set up camps, cook meals etc. We shall be totally self sufficient on this journey.

The sponsorship site for our trip has been set up at www.justgiving.com/everest2009 and any donations, no matter how big or small will be greatly appreciated by us all and by the Help For Heroes organisation.

This site will contain an online journal of the build up to the trip, including training days, equipment lists and other useful information.

Thanks for reading!!
